Why green ink?

Fountain-pen-nib_white1My favorite office accessory is a rollerball pen with green ink. I use it to write memos, to chew on in moments of pensive thought, and perhaps most importantly, to grade student papers.

Why green?

Green says go — and I want students to move forward with feedback, not see it as a stopping point. Learning media writing requires momentum. It requires growth and energy. In short, it requires green.

To quote a well-loved muppet, “It’s not easy being green.” A colleague of mine likes to say that we teach because we love it, but they have to pay us to grade. The work is worthy, but requires my energy and growth as well.

But it’s worth it.
